11 essential internet marketing acronyms


CGM: Consumer Generated Media- Information that is created and shared by consumers via social media. For example, image sharing on Flickr or stories on Digg.

CPM: Cost per thousand- Typically used in banner advertising, it is an online advertising model where the advertiser pays a fixed fee for every 1,000 impressions for their ad.

CTR: Click through rate- The average number of clicks per hundred ad impressions, expressed as a percentage.

PPC: Pay Per Click-An online advertising model where the advertiser only pays when someone clicks on their ads.

PR: Page Rank- A formula developed by Larry Page, co-founder of Google. This formula rates the search engine importance of a webpage out of 10.

RSS: Rich Site Summary/Really Simple Syndication- RSS is like your own personal wire service. When a person signs up for an RSS Feed, it is usually for a webpage that is updated often. They get notified when the update is done so that they don’t have to keep going back to the site to look for them.

SEM: Search Engine Marketing-The process of marketing your website on search engines via paid advertising.

SEO: Search Engine Optimization- The process of optimizing a website so that it has a higher ranking for relevant searches on search engines.

SERPS: Search engine results pages-The results page that shows up for relevant search on search engines. Your aim should be for your website to show up on page 1.

SMM: Social Media Marketing- The process of marketing a website, cause or product in social media networks.

SMO: Social Media Optimization-Optimizing a webpage so that the content on it can be shared easily within social networks.
